Six of MDOT's 81 rest areas to close for winter

Agency: Transportation

November 26, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced that six of its 81 rest areas are closing for the winter season. Five will be closed from Dec. 1, 2008 through April 6, 2009 and one will remain closed until June 1, 2009.

"The majority of our rest areas are open year-round for the convenience of motorists," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "Some of the more aesthetically-pleasing rest areas with steep hills and curves are a real challenge to keep clear of snow and ice during the winter months. For the protection of everyone, it is better to close them. We will save on energy costs, as well."

MDOT will close the following rest areas as of Monday, Dec. 1, 2008:

- Hart, southbound US-31, Oceana County
- Hebron, southbound I-75, Cheboygan County
- Ludington, northbound US-31, Mason County
- St. Ignace, southbound I-75, Mackinac County
- Topinabee, northbound I-75, Cheboygan
- Zeeland, eastbound I-196, Ottawa County (closed until June 1, 2009)

Anyone with questions about MDOT rest areas should contact Road Operations Specialist Scott Wheeler at 517-322-3314.
