November 14, 2008 -- Construction of the South Haven roundabout on M-43 at the intersection of 72nd St./County Road (CR) 689, and 12th Ave./CR 384 in Van Buren County is nearing completion and will soon be open to traffic. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) applied the final layer of asphalt yesterday, and will place the permanent pavement markings today, if weather permits. If it rains, pavement markings will be applied as soon as conditions allow. The roundabout will be opened to traffic after the pavement markings are applied. Work on the roundabout began in September.
A roundabout is a circular intersection that is designed to move traffic around a center island. As a driver approaches the roundabout, there will be a yield sign. The driver should slow down and be prepared to stop, if necessary. The driver will enter the roundabout, yielding to traffic, and continue in a counterclockwise motion until exiting by turning right at the desired street.
This $786,000 project will improve the traffic flow of this complex and congested intersection and enhance the safety for motorists.
