Task Force releases report; says Michigan needs to at least double current investment in transportation

Contact:  Rich Studley 517-371-7659
Agency: Transportation

November 10, 2008 -- After 10 months of discussion, public meetings and review of preliminary findings, the Transportation Funding Task Force (TF2) today released its formal report on Michigan's transportation needs to the Michigan Legislature, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the State Transportation Commission. The report is available online at: www.michigan.gov/tf2.

The report says Michigan needs to at least double its current investment in transportation to prevent a loss of up to $1 billion in federal funds each year and to adequately maintain Michigan's highways, roads, bridges, passenger transportation, freight transportation and aviation systems. The report also says that investing in transportation will create jobs and economic activity, attract business, increase revenue, and provide better transportation services to Michigan taxpayers. Both short-term and long-term funding alternatives are listed.

"Michigan needs to take action to stimulate economic activity and keep the personal mobility we enjoy today," said Rich Studley, TF2 co-chair.

"One of the best ways government can help improve the economy and create jobs is to invest in infrastructure," said Dennis Gillow, TF2 co-chair.

TF2 members looked at more than 100 different ways to raise revenue for all modes of transportation in Michigan, including roads, public transit, and aviation, to stave off a looming funding shortfall the state faces under the current system. TF2 members had only 10 months to complete a process that took two years to complete when last undertaken in 1999.

The bi-partisan task force appointed by the governor and Legislature in March met 10 times at various locations throughout the state. As part of their deliberations, TF2 members reviewed preliminary reports prepared by the bi-partisan Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) appointed in March by the governor and Legislature to assist the task force.

An executive summary, complete report and list of appendices is available by clicking on "View Final Report" at www.michigan.gov/tf2.
