WHAT: The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is conducting public information meetings at three locations in the Detroit area to present the preferred alternative identified by the Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal (DIFT) Study. The same information and opportunity for public comment will be featured at all three meetings. Each meeting takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Each meeting will have a formal presentation by MDOT at 6:30 p.m. regarding the preferred alternative, potential impacts, measures to mitigate potential impacts, and community enhancements, followed by an open microphone public comment session. MDOT is providing interpreters at all three locations for Arabic-speaking and Spanish-speaking persons.

BACKGROUND: Intermodal transportation combines the use of trains and trucks to ship materials and is one of the fastest growing segments of the shipping business. The DIFT is a project to improve and expand intermodal freight in southwest Detroit. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the study was completed in 2005. During the study, alternatives were developed based on public input. The Final Environmental Impact Statement is expected to be presented to the public by the spring of 2009.
The study team selected the preferred alternative after careful review of comments received from members of the public, other federal and state agencies, and the four railroads involved: CSX, Norfolk Southern, Canadian Pacific and Canadian National.
The preferred alternative involves consolidating the intermodal operations of three of the four railroads: CSX, Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific at the existing Livernois-Junction Yard in Detroit. Canadian National Railroad has decided not to move its operations to the Livernois-Junction Yard. It also has decided not to expand its existing facilities at the Moterm Terminal in Ferndale.
