BACKGROUND: The State of Michigan, city of Detroit and the Mexicantown community will celebrate the opening of the new Detroit Mexicantown International Welcome Center. Located in southwest Detroit near the Ambassador Bridge, this new facility is the state's 14th Welcome Center. Operated through a partnership of MDOT and MEDC, the new center will welcome millions of visitors and tourists who contribute more than $17 billion annually to the state's economy. The new center will be dedicated in honor of Detroit native Gloria J. Jeff, who served as state transportation director from January 2003 through January 2006. She was the first woman and the first African American MDOT director.
