MDOT to begin night work on US-131 in Grand Rapids

Agency: Transportation

August 12, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will make pavement and barrier wall repairs to US-131 in Grand Rapids on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The project extends from from M-11 to Wealthy Street; work will take place at night and on weekends to minimize the impact to motorists.

"This project was originally scheduled to be done next summer, but after the harsh winter and resulting damage on US-131, we needed to move the repairs up and get them done this year," said Roger Safford, MDOT Grand Region engineer.

Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., on Monday through Friday, and between 10 p.m. on Fridays and 6 a.m. on Mondays, northbound and southbound US-131 will be down to one lane in each direction. From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m., there will be a single lane closure, with two lanes open in each direction.

Ramp closures also will be necessary at times during the project. Updates on the time and dates of specific ramp closures will be provided throughout the project.

"This section of US-131 is one of the most heavily traveled stretches of roadway in our region," said Erick Kind, MDOT Grand Rapids Transportation Service Center manager. "The ability to do these repairs at night should ensure that traffic delays are minimal."

The $4.6 million project includes replacement lighting. Construction is scheduled to be completed by mid-November.
