May 7, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is completing the first phase of work on the bridges on US-31 over Buchanan Road in Oceana County. The single lane closures on northbound and southbound US-31 over Buchanan Road will be removed by Friday, May 9, two weeks ahead of schedule.
"The goal was to complete this work prior to Memorial Day weekend and open up all lanes over Buchanan Road for the summer months," said Tim Judge, MDOT Muskegon Transportation Service Center manager. "The weather cooperated with the contractor's ambitious schedule, allowing the restrictions to be lifted a few weeks earlier than originally planned."
The final phase of work will resume on US-31 following the Labor Day weekend.
On Buchanan Road under US-31, a temporary traffic signal will continue being used to maintain two-way traffic for several more weeks as crews paint the structures.
Joint replacement, deck and railing repairs and substructure work has been completed, and the concrete approaches on US-31 have been replaced.
This $565,000 project will improve the ride quality and extend the life of the structures.
