October 26, 2009 -- While there may not be such thing as a free lunch, there is the first-ever "Free Fare Day" being planned at the Mackinac Bridge for Sunday, Nov. 1, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA). From midnight to 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 1, the Mackinac Straits Health System Foundation and its co-sponsors will foot the bill for all non-commercial motorists crossing the Mackinac Bridge.

"Anyone traveling for work or pleasure, except for commercial travelers, will have their toll paid for by the Foundation," said MBA Executive Secretary Bob Sweeney. "Nov. 1 is the 52nd anniversary of our first crossing. In honor of this milestone, all non-commercial tolls will be paid for on this day."

The Mackinac Straits Health System is working in partnership with First National Bank of St. Ignace and the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island to commemorate this historic event. The Health System and its co-sponsors are raising awareness of the hospital's vast spectrum of services including but not limited to emergency, general medical, referral and on-site skilled nursing services. For more information on the Foundation, or to make a donation, visit www.mshosp.org.

Toll booth personnel at the bridge will be distributing travel first-aid kits all day.
