MDOT to study Ironwood US-2/Country Club Road intersection near new Wal-Mart

Contact:  James Lake 906-786-1830, ext. 323
Agency: Transportation

May 12, 2008 -- Later this month, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will study traffic flow and volume at the US-2/Country Club Road intersection, located near the new Ironwood Wal-Mart, to determine if a traffic signal is warranted.

This signal study was scheduled to coincide with the seasonal opening of the nearby golf course, after the new Wal-Mart opened, and before school recessed for the summer, in order to observe true peak traffic at the location.

"After meeting with local agencies and residents, it was agreed that this would be the ideal time to conduct the study," said Mike Premo, MDOT Crystal Falls Transportation Service Center (TSC) manager. "The study will observe traffic at this intersection when it is heaviest, which represents the greatest potential for delays."

Before a traffic signal can be placed, traffic volumes and delays must meet certain conditions. Installing traffic signals at locations not meeting those conditions has been shown to result in increased crashes and delays.

Results of the study will be released within a few months of completion. If warranted, a signal will be installed this fall.
