April 4, 2008 -- Michigan is a bicycling paradise with its scenic vistas and miles of picturesque orchards and waterfront. Now, two new award-winning bike maps are available to help plan your next trip.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) earned the First Place Award for its "Bay Region Road and Trail Bicycling Guide," produced by the East Central Michigan Planning and Development Region. It is one of two publications selected for honors at the annual Geospatial Information Systems for Transportation (GIS-T) Symposium. The bike map encompasses a 13-county region in East Central Michigan, including Saginaw, Bay City, Flint, and east to Port Sanilac.

The collaborative effort between MDOT and the planning region proved to be a winning combination. The colorful map shows road surface types, traffic volumes, paved/unpaved trails with regional significance, recreational facilities, points of interest, and other amenities that make cycling across Michigan more enjoyable.

MDOT also earned an Honorable Mention Award for the "Northeast Region Road and Trail Bicycling Guide," produced by the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments.

Copies of both maps are available for a small fee at www.michigan.gov/mdot-biking. Other region maps that may be ordered online include: Southwest Michigan, Northwest Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

The GIS-T Symposium is sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and annually attracts more than 400 participants from across the United States and Canada. This year, it drew attendees from as far away as France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.
