March 12, 2004 - - "The International Bridge is well-maintained and in good condition," commented John Schmid, Project Engineer for Parsons Transportation Group. Parsons, a world-renowned engineering firm with headquarters in New York City, has been inspecting the International Bridge since it was built in 1962. The 2003 inspection findings were presented to the Joint International Bridge Authority at their recently held quarterly meeting.
"The Parsons' engineer gave the International Bridge a clean bill of health again for the forty-first straight year," said International Bridge General Manager Phil Becker. "Parsons gave well-deserved high marks to our maintenance staff who perform the day-to-day maintenance on the structure."
The IBA operates and maintains the 2.8 mile-long bridge between Canada and the U.S. through an intergovernmental operating agreement. The inspections are important to ensure the safety of the nearly 2-million vehicles that cross each year.
This year, a two-man rappelling team was hired by Parsons to assist with the detailed examination and inspection of the structural integrity and critical components of the bridge.
"This report is a real tribute to the ingenuity of our maintenance team," Becker said.
"They are very creative in safely accessing the many hard-to-reach locations to perform quality and cost-effective repairs.”
