Continued strength of Canadian currency results in lower tolls at International Bridge

Contact:  Phil Becker 906-635-5255, ext. 112
Agency: Transportation

March 28, 2008 - - International Bridge customers paying with Canadian currency will again see the toll rate reduced, thanks to the continued strength of the Canadian dollar. The changes, effective Tuesday, April 1, are the result of the currency equity review done by bridge officials twice each year.

Starting Tuesday, the passenger vehicle rate for Canadian currency will be reduced from $2.20 to $2, which will be the same as the current U.S. dollar toll, and IQ commuter card deposits will decrease from $18.60 to $16.80. All other Canadian currency toll rates will be adjusted as well.

"With the required, semi-annual currency equity review, the rate continues to decrease for our customers paying with Canadian currency," said Phil Becker, International Bridge Administration (IBA) general manager.

The intergovernmental agreement, under which the bridge operates, mandates that the currency exchange rate be equalized every April and October, if the currency difference is large enough. The IBA is required to keep toll equity to within 5 cents in relation to currency exchange rates.

"This adjustment is needed because the value of the Canadian dollar was at or near par with the U.S. dollar during the previous six months," Becker said.
