Established in 1994, the Courtesy Patrol provides assistance to motorists by reducing potential crash situations, relieving traffic congestion and helping to create safer driving environments. For active people whose daily routines and obligations put them on the road, the patrol is an added measure of travel safety.

Currently, the Courtesy Van fleet includes 24 vans and employs 24 drivers. In 2007, the Courtesy Patrol saved an estimated 11.7 million hours of delay on freeways in the coverage area. According to a report issued by SEMCOG (Southeast Michigan Council of Governments),  a benefit of $15.90 is realized for each dollar spent.

Services are funded by MDOT through a grant from the Federal Highway Administration. Additional sponsors include: Michigan State Police and Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. The Freeway Courtesy Patrol is operated by AAA Michigan and Emergency Road Response for MDOT.
