There are two types of soundwalls built adjacent to freeways in the state. Type I soundwalls are required by federal law and these are erected when a freeway is built or widened. Applications for Type II soundwalls will be considered by MDOT on an annual basis. Local authorities need to submit an application for a Type II soundwall to MDOT, which then develops a prioritized eligibility list. If a project meets MDOT policy critieria, based on total project cost estimates, then local authorities, through agreements, resolutions, and/or ordinances, must agree to provide 10 percent of the cost of the noise abatement at the time or construction.
