May 16, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin work Monday, May 19, on a $7 million project to reconstruct eastbound I-94 from east of I-196 to Friday Road in Berrien County.

Work also includes concrete shoulder and median barrier cable construction, drainage improvements, and guardrail modifications.

Prep work will begin May 19, which will require intermittent single lane closures on I-94. Shortly after July 4, eastbound traffic will be crossed over to the westbound lanes of I-94, where two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained until mid-October.

"This stretch of road is in need of repairs," said Paul South, manager of MDOT's Transportation Service Center in Coloma. "Shifting eastbound traffic over to the westbound side will allow us to complete this work under safer conditions for both motorists and the road crews."

From early July until mid-October, the rest area located between Coloma and Watervliet will be closed for remodeling. Work on the eastbound I-94 project is scheduled to wrap up by mid-November.
