Freight Economic Development Program

The Freight Services and Safety Division of the Michigan Department of Transportation offers financial assistance to transportation companies, private companies or local units of government in the development and/or expansion of business and industries. The program offers financial assistance in the form of loan/grants covering up to 50 percent of the rail freight portion of the project when the rail improvement facilitates economic development.

The Economic Development Program has benefited transportation companies, local units of government, community based economic development organizations, the public and area shippers. Statistical data shows:

From 1995-2006

  • 36 Economic Development Projects have been funded
  • The State has invested $14,297,705.16
  • 3101 jobs have been created and/or retained
  • 88,419 annual carloads have been generated
