October 16, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced today that a second application totaling $993.6 million for improvements to the Chicago Hub (Chicago-Detroit/Pontiac) High-Speed Rail Corridor was submitted for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds on Oct. 2. The application was sent to the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program, which will provide $8 billion in competitive federal grants to support high-speed and intercity passenger rail projects across the country.

The application and its supporting maps can be viewed on the MDOT Web site at www.michigan.gov/mdot. Click on "Rail & Public Transit."

Michigan's application consists of a coordinated and comprehensive grouping of projects intended to provide significant improvements to the Chicago Hub Corridor, including track and grade crossing improvements, signal upgrades and train equipment acquisition. Planned improvements also are proposed for three stations along the corridor. A new station will be constructed in Troy to replace the Birmingham station; and a new station will be constructed in Dearborn combining two existing stations in that area. The third station, located in Battle Creek, will be rehabilitated.

MDOT expects a final decision from the FRA in early 2010. A set of nine additional applications to the federal recovery program was submitted in August.
