May 1, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have extended the public comment period by 30 days for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) Study. The comment period will now end on Thursday, May 29, 2008. The extension will give agencies, the public, and community groups more time to submit comments on the DEIS.

"We believe an additional 30 days of review will be beneficial to assure everyone has a chance to provide input," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "Both MDOT and the FHWA appreciate the importance of this international border crossing to the economies of the United States and Canada."

Comments on the DEIS must be e-mailed, faxed, or postmarked on or before May 29. MDOT and FHWA staff will respond to comments in the Final Environmental Impact Statement. Copies of the DEIS and supporting materials, including a Spanish version of the Executive Summary, are available for review at the following locations:

The DRIC Study is a bi-national effort to complete the environmental study processes for the United States, Michigan, Canada, and Ontario governments related to a new crossing. This study identifies solutions that support regional, state, provincial and national economies, while addressing the civil and national defense and homeland security needs of the busiest trade corridor in North America.

The DEIS examines the social, environmental and economic factors related to 10 alternatives (nine "build" alternatives and one "no-build" alternative) that would include a new border crossing (bridge) over the Detroit River, new customs and border protection facilities on both sides of the border, and direct connections to the freeway network in both the United States and Canada.

Comments regarding the DEIS may be e-mailed, faxed, or mailed to:
