Teacher Exchange Programs

Program Overview

Michigan has successfully established Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with several countries that allow for temporary (up to 3 years) placement of foreign teachers in Michigan schools.  These MOUs are authorized under MCL 380.1281(3) and allow for the utilization of the Full-Year Basic Permit for placement.  Michigan’s two main teacher exchange programs are with Taiwan and Spain.  Staffing Michigan Spanish and Chinese (Mandarin) Language & Culture classes with teachers native to the language enriches the learning for students by creating a more authentic experience. Taiwan additionally has a program for the exchange of technology and robotics teachers (e.g., STEM).  This video highlights these two exchange programs and provides guidance on how to navigate the process of hiring and welcoming our foreign colleagues.
