Great Parents, Great Start

The Department of Education administers the 2007-2008 Great Parents, Great Start Continuation Grants.  The program is supported through Section 32j of the State School Aid Act, as amended, P.A. 137 of 2007.  The Great Parents, Great Start Program Grants provide $5 million in continuation funding for collaborative community efforts to develop parent involvement and education programs.  Intermediate school district grantees may only request an amount not to exceed the district's 2006-2007 Section 32j payment. The programs must be designed for the families of children from birth to age five.  Funds will be awarded through a continuation process to intermediate school districts.

Four components are required:
  • Information on development of children from birth to age five.
  • Methods to enhance parent/child interaction that promote social and emotional development of infant and toddlers, and age-appropriate language, mathematics, and early reading skills.
  • Promotion of access to needed community services through a community-school-home partnership.
  • Provide parents with examples of learning opportunities to promote intellectual, physical, and social growth of children, five years of age and younger.

This grant builds upon the experience gained through the All Students Achieve Program - Parent Involvement in Education (ASAP-PIE) grants.
