Michigan's Root Beer Summits 2009: Conversations on Race and Diversity

Contact:  Harold Core 517-241-3986
Agency: Civil Rights

On November 17, 2009, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights will be hosting a statewide day of concurrent discussions in different cities to build a common understanding regarding racial, ethnic and other forms of diversity.  The program is designed to facilitate positive interactions across personal backgrounds, laying the foundation for more effective regional partnerships.

The focus cities are Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, Detroit, Farmington/Farmington Hills, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Macomb County, Mt. Pleasant, Saginaw, and Traverse City.  However, if you would like to organize a summit in your community, please let us know.

We will focus on Michigan brands for the root beer and any other snacks served during the summits.

Event Summary:

The event agenda and format is based loosely on the Metro Detroit Teen Conference, which brings together students from different backgrounds to discuss differences and discover common ground.  Every city interested in hosting a summit will be asked to form summit teams.  Each team will be responsible for organizing a local summit, including securing participants, locations, funding and local community support.

The program itself will be up to four hours long, including a welcome, comments from local sponsors or leaders and approximately two to three hours of facilitated discussion between the participants.  The discussion will take place at tables of six to eight people, with a trained facilitator seated at each table.  An event moderator will preside over the event, providing discussion questions and facilitating the full group discussion.  Following the small group discussion of each question, the small groups would be asked to report on their answers to the full group.

  Volunteers needed:

  • Each city will need an event planning team to secure facilities, attendees, table facilitators, refreshments (including root beer!) and funding sources if needed.  Planners will be responsible for hosting events in their communities, with guidance from MDCR staff.
  • Table Facilitators will be needed to facilitate discussion at each of the tables during the event.  Table Facilitators will have to commit to attending a three hour facilitators' training session approximately two weeks before the event.

Summit Team Resources:

Flyers: The Word document flyers are made so that the teams can add in information regarding specific events.  The PDF file is a postcard format.  The blank side of the postcard can be used for address labels, stamps and information about a specific summit location and time.
