Oral Health and Medical ProfessionalsInfant Oral Health Training and Resource Materials for Medical Providers
Effective July 1, 2012, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) "Infant and Children Oral Health for Medical Professionals" online training is replaced with "Smiles for Life: A National Oral Health Curriculum" at www.smilesforlifeoralhealth.org "Smiles for Life" is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
Physicians and nurse practitioners (NP) who complete specified certification requirements are allowed to bill Medicaid for fluoride varnish applications provided to children ages 0-35 months up to four times in a 12-month time period, as described in the Medicaid Provider Manual, Practitioner Chapter, Section 3.
Physicians and NPs who are not currently certified to bill Medicaid for fluoride varnish must complete the "Smiles for Life Course 6: Fluoride Varnish" training module of the curriculum as a first step in the certification process. The training module is available at no charge for individual users. One continuing medical education (CME) credit is awarded after completing this module.
To obtain certification to bill Medicaid for fluoride varnish applications, physicians and NPs must submit the following information to the MDCH Oral Health Program:
1. Certificate of completion from the "Smiles for Life Course 6: Fluoride Varnish" module; and 2. Contact Information Form Contact Information Form
