Practice Improvement for Persons with Developmental Disabilities
Subcommittee Chair: Judy Webb, Director, Division of Qulaity Management and Planning email: Webb@michigan.gov
In response to concerns about slowness or lack of development of opportunities in some communities for competitive jobs, relationships and independent living for persons with developmental disabilities, MDCH established the Developmental Disabilities Practice Improvement Team (DD PIT) in May 2005. Representatives were recruitedfrom CMHSPs, universities, providers and advocacy organizations. (List of Committee Members)
The team identified the desired outcomes for people with developmental disabilities, and the opportunities and challenges for achieving the outcomes. The DD PIT is developing a strategy for informing families, providers, CMHSPs, and educators about the possibilities for individuals with developmental disabilities by sharing stories of people's successes, including those with the most profound impairments, who are working in real jobs and living on their own with supports. The MACMHB 2006 winter conference (February 28-March 1, 2006), and the annual Developmental Disabilities Conference sponsored by MDCH and Michigan State University (April 25 & 26,2006), will offer sessions on these topics.
The DD PIT is also developing guidance for CMHSPs and providers who want to offer community opportunities as an alternative to segregated programs to people with developmental disabilities but are uncertain about how to begin the process.
