EMT-Specialist & Paramedic Practical Examination Information

In 2001, the State of Michigan began utilizing the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMTs) exam process to facilitate both the written and practical portions of the State Exam.  You are eligible to take the advanced practical exam within two years of completing a Michigan approved EMT-Specialist or Paramedic course.  If the date of the exam is beyond the two year timeframe, you are no longer eligible to take the exam and must complete a new course.

The exam reservation form, included below, must be completed in it's entirety and faxed to our office at (517) 241-9458.  We will not accept reservation forms by mail or email, no exceptions.  The reservation form must be received in our office prior to the cutoff date, which is three weeks prior to your desired exam date.  Please refer to the National Registry website at: www.nremt.org for a listing of these dates.  If you are retesting, please refer to the information below for further details.

The Department schedules exams in conjunction with National Registry three weeks prior to the specified exam date, therefore a confirmation letter will not be sent to you until you have been scheduled with the National Registry.  The Department will make every attempt to accommodate your first choice, however due to the voluminous nature of requests we may be unable to do so.

Please note that you will not be able to take the exam without the confirmation letter.  On the day of your exam, you must present your confirmation letter and exam fee upon check-in.  All fees must be paid by money order or certified check, made payable to the confirmed exam site.  No personal checks will be accepted.

Effective with all exam dates after
January 1, 2010, practical exam fee's have increased as noted on the Advanced Practical Exam Reservation Form.

If you are confirmed for an exam and are unable to attend on your scheduled date or do not show up, you are required to complete a new reservation form before you can be re-scheduled.  You will be scheduled for the next exam based on availability after all other candidates have been scheduled.

Candidates Re-testing (Partial or Full Retest)

If time allows and at the discretion of the exam site, you may be able to retest the practical exam on the same day, however it cannot be guaranteed.  Otherwise, you will be required to retest on a different date.  To reschedule, you must submit a new reservation form along with your Official Exam Results from National Registry to our office.  You should receive your results within 7-10 business days from your exam date.  If you do not receive your results or no longer have a copy, you must contact National Registry directly at: (614) 888-6484 to obtain a duplicate.

Questions regarding the advanced practical exam process may be directed to Lila Snider, Personnel Licensing, at: (517) 241-0179 or ljsnide@michigan.gov.
