The Division conducts routine epidemiologic surveillance to document trends in mortality, morbidity and costs in disease topic areas including but not limited to cardiovascular, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, and for different populations from infants, children, pregnant women, childbearing age women and men to elderly. The Division is responsible for the administration of two surveys funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (BRFS) and Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS). While BRFS is an important and unique source of information about health behaviors of Michigan's population, PRAMS provides state-specific data for planning and assessing health programs and for describing maternal experiences that may contribute to maternal and infant health. The Division also assists in the department's response to enquiries regarding local adverse health events (disease clusters), and collaborates on the development and enhancement of surveillance indicators and systems.

Division Initiatives

Genomics A multi-faceted program that provides assessment, policy development, and assurance related to birth defects, genetic disorders, and the use of genomics in public health programs.	Newborn Screening Follow-up Unit   The Newborn Screening Follow-up Program assures that all Michigan newborns are screened for 49 disorders and if there is a positive screen the newborn is referred for diagnosis and medical management.
Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Section The mission of this Section is to provide statewide epidemiological leadership and expertise for the maternal and child health programs that support women and children in Michigan.	Chronic Disease Epidemiology Section   The Chronic Disease Epidemiology Section provides an epidemiologic understanding of prevention, management, and control of chronic diseases in Michigan.
