|
The Michigan Abstinence Program (MAP) aims to positively impact adolescent health by promoting abstinence from sexual activity and related risky behaviors such as the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
Target Population
A comprehensive approach targeting 9-17 year old children and their parents is used and includes coalitions, community activity, media, and educational and promotional items.
The following community agencies are being funded through September 30, 2007 to provide abstinence programming:
- Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District
- Catholic Social Services of Muskegon
- District Health Department #10
- Eaton Intermediate School District
- Human Aid of Gladwin County
- Jackson County
- Lakeshore Pregnancy Center
- Macomb Family YMCA
- St. John Community Health
- Tuscola Intermediate School District
- Wedgwood Christian Services of Kent County
Each funded community has an established coalition which develops and implements abstinence activities specific to their local needs. Primary activities are based on models of health behavior change and are research-based. These activities provide youth with intensive and direct interventions which promote personal respect and responsibility, build skills for dealing with peer pressure, and are age, gender and culturally relevant.
