Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) wants to serve all persons who are eligible for services as quickly as possible.
Sometimes, however, we may not have enough staff or funds to do so. If this should happen, we will tell you about it at the same time we tell you about your eligibility for services.
If we cannot serve everyone who is eligible right away, your name will be placed in one of three priority groups:
-
most significantly disabled
-
significantly disabled
-
not significantly disabled
If we cannot serve everyone, federal law says we must serve people with the most significant disabilities first. Second, we would serve people with severe disabilities. Third, we would serve people whose disabilities are not significant.
Definitions of Significant
You will be determined most significantly disabled if you are limited because of your disability in two or more areas. These areas could be walking, talking, hearing, taking care of yourself, or working at a job.
You will be determined significantly disabled if you are limited in one of these areas or in a similar area.
If you are not limited in one of these areas or in a similar area, your disability will be determined not significant.
Eligible for Services
Michigan Rehabilitation Services will tell you which priority group you have been assigned when you are informed that you are eligible for services.
You will also be told whether you will need to wait for services or if you will be served right away.
Right to Appeal
If you do not agree with the category you are assigned, you have the right to appeal. The brochure "How to Appeal Decisions Made by Michigan Rehabilitation Services"describes the Michigan Rehabilitation Services appeals process. You may obtain a copy of this brochure at any Michigan Rehabilitation Services office.
If you need help with an appeal, contact the Client Assistance Program (CAP). CAP counselors are available to help you at no cost to you. Call the CAP toll free number, 1-800-292-5896 (voice/TTY).
