SUMMARY:
Their goal is to impact the community by ensuring that the North End Soup Kitchen's services, expanded in 2010, are sustained and to help more Genesee County residents connect to community gardens where they will learn modern gardening techniques and how to prepare fresh vegetables. In an effort to meet the need for fresh fruits and vegetables a loosely organized coalition of individuals and institutions dedicated to creating and sustaining community gardens emerged as Edible Flint. To date, Edible Flint has knowledge of 180 non-residential community gardens on public land or land owned by the Genesee County Land Bank. Edible Flint, which has garnered national and international attention as the future of the urban agriculture movement, is supported by the Ruth Mott Foundation with funds and personnel and is a major partner in this work.
