2013 AmeriCorps Week

2012 Michigan's AmeriCorps Week Logo What is AmeriCorps Week?
AmeriCorps Week is a weeklong, nationwide event designed to bring more Americans into service, salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their powerful impact, and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible. The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act has set a bold vision of expansion, impact, and innovation for AmeriCorps, and momentum for national service has never been stronger.

What does AmeriCorps do in Michigan?
AmeriCorps members have been "Getting Things Done" in Michigan since 1994. AmeriCorps members combat illiteracy, respond to disasters, build homes, mentor and tutor children, protect the environment, improve health care, and much more.

When does Michigan's AmeriCorps Week take place?
The seventh annual Michigan's AmeriCorps Week is March 9-17, 2013.

Who can participate in AmeriCorps Week?
The broader the participation the better! Individuals and organizations with a special interest in AmeriCorps - especially members, programs, and alums - are encouraged to use their creativity to mark the week in any way they see fit. The choice is up to you!

What is Michigan doing for AmeriCorps Week?
Michigan's AmeriCorps programs will plan various AmeriCorps Week projects and events throughout the state. These projects help to showcase the power of AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps alums through service in Michigan, as well as educate key stakeholders on the role, impact, and potential of national service. These projects will engage Michigan's AmeriCorps*State, National, and VISTA members, Senior Corps volunteers, AmeriCorps Alums, and other community partners. To find out what projects and events are taking place throughout Michigan, click here.

The second annual Michigan's AmeriCorps Week Twitter Chat will also be held during the weeklong celebration. The Twitter Chat, scheduled for Wednesday, March 13 at 12:00 p.m., provides an opportunity for AmeriCorps members past and present to come together online to talk about their AmeriCorps experience. For more information about the Twitter Chat, including key questions to consider and how to get involved, click here.

What Can I Do During AmeriCorps Week?
Those with a special interest in AmeriCorps are encouraged to use their creativity to mark the week in any way they see fit. For example, members and alumni could make presentations to students or community groups. Grantees could stage an open house, service project, or volunteer fair. Local officials and leaders could be asked to serve as an AmeriCorps member for a day. And members and programs could spread the word about the power of service by writing letters to the editor or blogging about their service online.

Are There Resources Available for Michigan's AmeriCorps Programs?
Yes, the MCSC has created a   2013 AmeriCorps Week Toolkit . It contains a variety of resources and ideas to help Michigan's AmeriCorps programs increase their visibility and plan activities.
