Brittany Galisdorfer received the Detroit Free Press' Dave Bing Future Leader Award in October 2009. The honor is one of the annual "Shining Light Awards" which recognize local leaders who promote regional cooperation and build bridges in Metropolitan Detroit. Brittany served as an AmeriCorps member with the Michigan AmeriCorps Partnership (MAP) program in 2006.
Brittany currently works as a Program Director for the Michigan Suburbs Alliance. Since joining the organization, her work has included managing its financial operations and leading an initiative to help local governments aggregate their buying power for energy efficient products. She is also pursuing a Masters Degree at the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.
While a U-M undergraduate math major, Brittany served as an AmeriCorps member with a U-M Residential College project. She piloted interactive methods for teaching math (modeled on those used by Robert Moses in his Algebra Project) at Cesar Chavez Academy in Southwest Detroit. Brittany's leadership helped the program find a sustainable source of volunteers and connect it to a national after-school organization that also grew out of Moses' work.
According to Brittany, "My AmeriCorps service helped me build the skills necessary to organize and mediate the interests of a diverse set of stakeholders when working to make change. It also meant the chance to better understand, give back to, and learn from my community."
Brittany continues to promote the AmeriCorps spirit of service by volunteering on a number of advisory boards in her community. She is an elected member of the Downtown Detroit Citizens District Council (which represents residents' interests on development proposals in downtown Detroit), a member of Central United Methodist Church's Finance Committee, and a non-voting Board member of Bridging Communities Inc. (a Detroit nonprofit that assists the elderly in maintaining independent lives through intergenerational programming, building affordable housing, and providing transportation, meals, home repairs, and remembrances).
