Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Everybody can be great because everybody can serve." To honor his words of inspiration and encouragement, the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) asked you to mark January 19, 2009 on your calendar - the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
The
MLK
Day of Service was initiated by Congress in 1994 and has been developed beyond a federal holiday honoring Dr. King into a national day of community service. In honor of this special day, thousands of service projects were planned across the country grounded in Dr. King's teachings of nonviolence and social justice.
Everyone was encouraged to participate in the
MLK
Day of Service and all types of service were accepted. The Martin Luther King Day of Service Toolkit, available at
www.MLKDay.gov , helped many people plan their 2009 project. Once planning was complete, organizations were asked to register their service projects at the same site.
In Michigan, 366 projects took place on Monday, January 19. To find out more about those projects, read the

Many people felt feel free to utilize the MCSC's

Publicity was one of the keys to the success of the 2009 MLK Day service projects. To help, the MCSC created media advisory and press release templates that were shared with news outlets in communities:
