Michigan Collection at the Library of Michigan

The Library of Michigan's Michigan Collection consists of current and historical materials from all subject areas which concentrate on Michigan and the Great Lakes.

Titles are selected that enhance the knowledge of the State and its people. The collection consists of items in multiple formats including books, microfilm, microfiche, maps and videos.

The Michigan Collection is located on the second floor of the Library. First copies of all titles in the Michigan collection are noncirculating reference copies and must be used within the Library. Any duplicate copies can be checked out by those with Library of Michigan circulation privileges, state employees and affiliates of our shared online catalog, the faculty, students and staff of Michigan State University. A large number of Michigan titles are housed in the Martha W. Griffiths Michigan Rare Book Room. The Rare Book Room is open Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Fiction and poetry by noted authors who are identified with Michigan can be found in the Michigan Collection. Current fiction and poetry will only be added to the Library of Michigan's holdings if they are written by a Michigan author or if the work is set in Michigan or the Great Lakes.

Items in the Michigan Collection are arranged by the Library of Congress classification system. Library users can search ANSWER the Library of Michigan's online catalog, to discover call number, format, and location of each title. A significant portion of the Michigan Maps have not been cataloged. If you need assistance finding maps or any Michigan resource, please request help at any of the second floor reference desks. For more information on maps, go to the Map collection page.
