Recreational Activities
BSBP Training Center
Bureau of Services for Blind Persons
Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
The recreation component of the BSBP Training Center program is designed to show people that a wide range of enjoyable recreational activities are still available to them despite their loss of vision. This program consists of many activities that help students relax, keep active and enjoy their stay at the center. These activities may be formal, informal, physical, cultural, entertaining or just plain fun.
Activities that are offered on a regular basis include bowling, swimming, walking, shopping and dining out. Some activities are offered on a seasonal basis, such as horseback riding, tandem bicycling, and outings to Lake Michigan. Still others are offered only as special events, such as water skiing, kayaking, cross-country skiing and golf.
Cultural and entertainment activities available include going to movies, plays, concerts, museums and sporting events. All recreational activities are optional and may be organized by the recreational coordinator, by groups of students on their own initiative, or by individuals according to their personal tastes and inclinations. Of course, the recreational coordinator is always receptive to new ideas and suggestions, and many of the center's most interesting activities have been initiated by students.
