Elevator Examination Schedule, Licensing Information and Applications
Qualifications for Elevator Journeyperson's License
- Three years of continuous employment as a supervisor of elevator construction or service, or as an elevator constructor, serviceman, maintenance man, or repairman. (Up to one year of credit may be provided for a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering from a recognized college or university.)
- Must take and pass the examination.

Qualifications for Elevator Contractor's License
- Five years experience as an elevator constructor or journeyperson, or equivalent.
- Must take and pass the examination.
Application for Elevator Contractor License Examination
Qualifications for Elevator Certificate of Competency (C of C) General elevator inspector
- Three years of experience in elevator construction.
- Provide one or more written references certifying your experience in the elevator industry.
- Pass the written and oral examination.
Special elevator inspector
- Three years of experience in designing, installing, maintaining, or inspecting elevators.
- Provide one or more written references certifying your experience in the elevator industry.
- Pass the written and oral examination.

All Journeyperson Examination Applicants must go before the Elevator Safety Board for approval.
The exam site and parking are accessible. Individuals attending the exam are requested to refrain from using heavily scented personal care products, in order to enhance accessibility for everyone. Please make sure all cell phones, pagers and other personal elecronic devices are turned off or set to vibrate. People with disabilities requiring additional services (such as materials in alternative format) should contact the Elevator Safety Division at 517-241-9337 at least 10 work days before the event.
