CIS Summarily Suspends Lenawee County Nurse's License Due to Substance AbuseContact: Maura Campbell 517.373.9280 Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
SEPTEMBER 23, 2003 - The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) has summarily suspended the nursing license of Charlene Kae Anderson, R.N., due to substance abuse. The CIS Bureau of Health Services orders a summary suspension when it believes that the public's health, safety, and welfare warrant emergency action.
In August 2001, in preparation for relocation to Michigan, Anderson contacted the Michigan Health Professional Recovery Program (HPRP), a non-disciplinary program that supports recovery from chemical dependence, substance abuse, and/or mental illness. Enacted legislatively in 1994, the HPRP encourages health professionals to address their problems before their impairment harms a patient or damages their careers. Anderson was previously involved in a similar program in the state of Florida.
In October 2001, Anderson entered into a one-year monitoring agreement with the HPRP. In November 2002, based on instances of non-compliance, the HPRP referred Respondent for long-term treatment. When Anderson failed to enter into treatment as recommended, the HPRP closed Anderson's file and forwarded it to CIS, who summarily suspended Anderson's license on September 9, 2003. An administrative hearing will be scheduled to address the status of Anderson's nursing license.
Additional information about the HPRP is available by calling 1-800-453-3784.
