CIS Summarily Suspends Kalamazoo Pharmacist's License Due to DiversionContact: Maura Campbell 517.373.9280 Agency: Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
APRIL 15, 2003 - The Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS) has summarily suspended the pharmacy license of Karl M. Munn, R.Ph., for the improper dispensing of controlled substances. The CIS Bureau of Health Services issues a summary suspension when it believes the public's health, safety and welfare warrant emergency action.
In December 2001, CIS was notified by the Drug Enforcement Agency that Mann was suspected of diverting controlled substances from his employer to provide to patients in exchange for money and cocaine. Subsequently, CIS pharmacy inspectors conducted an audit of the pharmacy where Munn was employed as manager and discovered that 15,000 dosage units of hydrocodone-containing product were unaccounted for during the audit period May 1, 2000 to March 18, 2002.
As a result, on April 4, 2003, CIS summarily suspended Munn's pharmacy license. An administrative hearing will be scheduled to address the status of Munn's suspended license.
