Ribbon cutting and open house for $5.4 million National Guard Reserve Center in Shiawassee County

Contact:  Staff Sgt. Gabe Morse 517-243-9587

PRESS RELEASE
December 3, 2007

Lansing, Mich.--Michigan National Guard officials will participate in a
ribbon cutting ceremony and open house tomorrow at 12 noon at the new $5.4 million federally funded reserve center in Corunna, Mich. The facility located on Corunna Avenue (M-71) east of the Shiawassee County Road Commission is the home station and training facility for the nearly 200 Soldiers of the 144th Military Police Company, Michigan Army National Guard.

The 37,350 square foot building provides the military police much needed space, something the unit's previous facility--the land-locked, 92-year-old National Guard armory located on Water Street in
Owosso--could not provide. Additional improvements include showers and locker rooms, a larger administrative area and an energy efficient cooling and ventilation system. The general contractor for the project was LA Construction Company, of Flushing, Mich.

Members of the 144th MP Company visited their new home for the first time in October as they stepped off the bus that brought them home from a tour of duty in Iraq that began July 2006. While deployed, the Soldiers trained local Iraqi police forces on MP tactics and techniques, later allowing a transition from coalition policing to Iraqi control.

Tomorrow's ceremony and open house is open to the public.

MEDIA ADVISORY

The media is invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony and open house.  For more information, contact Staff Sgt. Gabe Morse
