LANSING,
Mich. - The 177th Military Police Brigade, Michigan Army National Guard
in Taylor, Mich., will deploy nearly 70 Guardsmen on Saturday in support
of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Already on military orders and packing at the
armory, the deploying soldiers will depart Saturday to meet up with
members of the 177th at Fort Bliss, Texas, where the unit will complete
soldier readiness processing before deploying to Iraq.
Col. Mike Stone, deputy brigade commander for the
177th said that while deployed, the Guardsmen will serve as the higher
headquarters for other military police units in Iraq.
Today, nearly 1,500 Michigan National Guard
soldiers and airmen are deployed across the globe to locations such as
Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Kosovo, United Arab Emirates, and the New
Mexico and Arizona border. Since Sept. 11, 2001, more than 85 percent of
the Michigan Guard has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom
and Operation Enduring Freedom; however, as Michigan troops serve the
nation, more than 80 percent of the Michigan Guard remain available and
ready to respond to a state emergency including a terrorist event.
