Press Release
January 19, 2007
SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, MICH
- Air National Guardsmen and F-16s from Selfridge Air National Guard Base
arrived at Balad Air Base, Iraq, late last week and will fly missions as part of
the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing there until the beginning of March.
The Guardsmen from the 127th Wing will provide air-to-air
and air-to-ground combat operations and close air support to U.S. forces on the
ground. Support personnel, including aircraft maintenance, fuels, weapons, and
life support, will ensure that the aircraft and pilots get off the ground to
accomplish their aerial missions.
The 107th Fighter Squadron has been flying the F-16 since
1989. In 2004 the unit deployed to Kirkuk Air Base, Iraq, and was the first F-16
squadron to be operationally based inside the Iraqi border.
The deployment of the 107th Fighter Squadron has been
anticipated for months as part of the unit's Air Combat Command Air
Expeditionary Force (AEF) cycle in which scheduled units are required to support
both forward presence missions and short-notice taskings. Air National Guard
units know more than a year in advance when they are committed to an AEF
tasking, allowing members and their employers to structure work schedules to
enable participation.
The 127th Wing also currently has about 40 airmen deployed
to various bases in southwest Asia in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and
Enduring Freedom. These airmen work in an assortment of capacities, including
supply, communications, personnel, combat weather, pavement and construction,
vehicle maintenance, medical personnel, and fuels, and will be deployed for
varying lengths of time.
