Lansing,
Mich.--Michigan National Guard officials will participate in a
ribbon cutting ceremony for Jackson's new $6.3 million armory,
tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. The $6.3 million dollars includes $5.5
million in federal funds and $744,000 in state funds. Scheduled to
attend the ceremony are Senator Carl Levin and Jackson Mayor Marty
Griffin.
The 45,480 square
foot facility will house Michigan Army National Guard's 272nd
Regimental Support Group, the 107th Quartermaster Battalion, and the
1461st Combat Heavy Equipment Transportation Company. The building
includes current technical standards throughout, classrooms with
built-in projection systems, a state of the art kitchen, a 6,200
square foot assembly hall, a military vehicle parking area, and a
physical fitness room.
On a typical drill
weekend, approximately 411 Soldiers will train at the new armory,
located at 4850 Cooper Rd., Jackson, Mich. Both the 1461st and the
107th are currently deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom.
The armory was
built by Granger Construction Company of Lansing and designed by
Progressive Engineering, Grand Rapids.
