History behind the name: Project Blue Star

Created in 1917 by World War I Army Capt. Robert L. Queissner, the Blue Star Banner was a touching and patriotic symbol of those young men who sacrificed their lives for this country.  A flag with a blue star emblazoned in the center, the Blue Star Banner emerged as the unofficial sign of a child in the service.

Since that time, in windows across the country, the Blue Star has continued to inspire neighborhoods across the nation; numerous groups have formed, most notably the Blue Star Mothers and Gold Star Mothers of America.

For more information, or if you would like to purchase a star, please visit the American Legion website: www.legion.org/support/?section=sup_bluestar&content=support_bluestar; or call 1-888-453-4466.
