He was admitted to practice in Florida in 1977 and Michigan in 1979. He has also practiced extensively in the federal courts of both states. He has been a member of the Michigan Trial Lawyers since 1985, and has served in the capacity of Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President, President Elect and President of that organization.

The Mackinac Island State Park Commission consists of seven members appointed by the governor of Michigan and confirmed by the Michigan Senate.  Its other members include Karen Karam (vice chair), Laurie A. Stupak (secretary), Frank J. Kelley, Richard A. Manoogian and Fr. Jim Williams.
