Michigan Historical Center Director Sandra Clark today announced that Mark Harvey has been named state archivist of Michigan.

Harvey, who headed the State Archives reference services from 1997 to 2005, is a graduate of Calvin College.  He earned both an M.A. in history and archival administration and an MLIS in information and technology studies from Wayne State University.  Harvey replaces Dave Johnson, the former state archivist who retired earlier this year.

"The selection team was particularly impressed with Mark's commitment to customer service, inclusive institutional planning, collaboration and educational outreach," said Clark.  "We are confident that Mark has the vision and leadership to ensure that Michigan's treasured history is protected and that it becomes much more accessible and relevant for today's residents."

"The State Archives fosters a user environment that pairs 21^st-century technology with centuries-old paper documents and helps researchers find the archival sources to tell their own stories," said Harvey.

The State Archives, part of the Michigan Historical Center, is the repository of all state government records of archival value.  It also holds extensive collections of maps, photographs and manuscripts documenting Michigan's history.
