Department of History, Arts and Libraries (HAL) Director Dr. William Anderson today announced the availability of $100,000 in grants for local and state historical societies throughout Michigan. Administered by the Michigan Historical Center, the funds will be distributed through a competitive grant program for projects that may involve capital improvements, research, educational programs interpretation, publications or professional development.
"From Iron Mountain to Monroe, history organizations are preserving and telling the stories that make up Michigan's fascinating past," said Dr. Anderson. "We are pleased that the Legislature and the governor have given us this opportunity to support them in this important work."
State and local non-profit organizations whose primary mission supports Michigan history will have the opportunity to apply for a $500 to $10,000 grant. Some of the funds will be used for professional development mini-grants.
To qualify, applicants must have non-profit, 501 (c) (3) status, must be a membership-based organization, and must have articles of incorporation that demonstrate a clear focus on state or local history.
The application deadline is March 15, 2005. Awards will be made in April and work must be completed by Sept. 15, 2005. For detailed information, guidelines, and an application, visit www.michiganhistory.org.
