With funding from an FY2003 LSTA sub-grant, the Michigan Library Consortium has begun work with a consultant to develop a statewide book-delivery system for Michigan’s libraries. The system needs to be in place by the time the first libraries begin using the statewide catalog and resource-sharing system in 2004.
Dan Bolger of the Bolger Group in Millersport, Ohio, was hired the second week of June to survey Michigan library delivery services, design a system to maximize delivery and minimize costs, write an RFP for delivery services and help select a vendor. Bolger was instrumental in obtaining the successful delivery system used by Ohio libraries.
The newly formed MeL Delivery Task Force will work with MLC staff and Bolger to find a vendor that meets the needs of Michigan’s libraries. They also will recommend policies, pricing structure and procedures for operation of the delivery service. The goal is a rapid exchange of books among participating libraries throughout the state, with most deliveries within 48 hours.
The Task Force includes representatives from a variety of libraries around the state. A Task Force description is available, along with a Task Force Roster.
