Census 2000 Poverty Ratios by County, Age, and Sex

This page contains special tabulations of census poverty data that were prepared by the Library of Michigan using the Census Bureau’s Advanced Query System, which enables affiliates of the Census Bureau to prepare custom tabulations of census information based on the complete file of census long-form records.

The standard census tabulation of poverty ratios—table PCT50 of Summary File 3—provides population counts for 10 poverty levels and 13 age groups for a wide range of geographic areas. The Census Bureau has not published poverty ratios by age and sex.

The tabulations on this page provide similar age detail, but they also include breakdowns by sex as well as four additional poverty ratios not available in standard census products: 25 percent, 135 percent, 250 percent, and 300 percent of the poverty level.

Special Tables. The following tables have been derived from the 2000 Census to meet the needs of specific programs in the Michigan Department of Community Health:

Full Age and Poverty Detail. The following tables contain poverty counts and rates by county and sex for the full range of available age groups and poverty levels.

Available age groups include: 0-6, 7-11, 12-14, 15-17, 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-74, 75+, and Total (all ages). Users who wish to combine age groups can calculate the pertinent poverty rates by dividing figures for the selected poverty level by corresponding figures for “all persons for whom poverty status is determined.”

Note that sex breakdowns are not available at this level of age detail for seven small counties because of Census Bureau confidentiality criteria.

Broad Age Groups with Full Poverty Detail. The following tables contain poverty counts and rates by county and sex for four broad age groups and the full range of available poverty levels.

The broad age groups used in these tables are: 0-14, 15-44, 45-59, 60+, and Total (all ages). Users who wish to combine age groups can calculate the pertinent poverty rates by dividing figures for the selected poverty level by corresponding figures for “all persons for whom poverty status is determined.”

These breakdowns by broad age group and sex are available for all counties.

Notes on Poverty Data

The following information should be kept in mind when interpreting poverty rates:

(1) Poverty status is not determined for people living in institutions, people living in college dormitories or military barracks, or people under age 15 who are not related to the person identified as householder.

(2) Communities with large universities have elevated poverty rates, despite the omission of people living in college dormitories.

(3) Poverty status is calculated separately for household members who are not related to one another, including unmarried partners. Thus, some members of a household can be above the poverty line while others are below it, even though financial resources may be shared by the entire household.

(4) Census poverty statistics are based on income in calendar-year 1999 and family structure in April, 2000.

(5) Like all data derived from a sample, poverty statistics are subject to sampling error. The level of sampling error tends to be largest for small segments of the population.
