The U.S. Census Bureau has released profiles of demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics for 39 counties and groups of counties in Michigan. These profiles are based on the American Community Survey. They are called "rural statistical areas" (RSA's) because their purpose is to make data available on an annual basis for non-metropolitan areas. Despite their name, RSA's encompass the entire state, including metropolitan counties.
These profiles are being released on an experimental basis, and the Census Bureau is seeking feedback on the following questions:
- Are the RSA geographies useful in their current construction?
- Would the RSA geographies be more useful if the counties were grouped differently? What alternate groupings would be useful? [Note that, in order to publish data for individual calendar years, RSA's have a minimum size threshold of 65,000 persons.]
- The RSAs are currently county-based geographies. Would value be added to the RSA geography if it was a tract-based geography? How would you group the tracts?
- Do the RSA geographies provide you with information that you cannot otherwise access through the ACS?
If you use these profiles, please send an e-mail to the State Demographer [ dargak(a)michigan.gov ] by March 19, 2008, with:
-
any comments in response to the four questions listed above; and
-
a copy, link, or description of any table or analysis that was prepared from data in these profiles.
Information from Michigan data users will be combined and submitted to the Census Bureau.
Every county is included in an RSA, and Michigan's RSA's can generally be combined to produce data for the state's 14 Regional Planning Areas. (The only exception is that Region 11 had to be combined with Region 12 because Region 11 has fewer than 65,000 people.)
