Programs Supported by Public Funds
State aid are per capita grants awarded annually to public libraries according to statute.
Penal fines are distributed to public libraries by county treasurers. The amount is determined yearly based on population and local laws.
Library Services and Technology Act LSTA is a federal library funding program designed to support statewide initiatives and competitive grant programs. Through LSTA legislation, the Institute for Museum and Library Services IMLS, an independent federal agency, provides grants to State Library administrative agencies to improve and support library, museum and information services.
Tech for Libraries is a listing of grant resources from the Library of Michigan and other sources that can help you upgrade to broadband and support that connection.
Universal Service Fund USF E-rate provides support for K-12 schools and libraries. It is often called E-rate, or Education Rate.
Bill and Melinda Gates PAC HUG Program is a one-time upgrade grant program designed to help libraries serving disadvantaged communities replace and upgrade public access computers, including hardware and software, to better meet the needs of their communities.
Digitization for Preservation and Access (DPA) grants provide assistance for the digitization and preservation of library materials.

• Reed Act/Gates Foundation The Reed Act/Gates Foundation used federal Reed Act funds allocated to the library by the Michigan legislature and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funds for one-time broadband upgrade costs. The program enabled public libraries to enhance the connectivity of their public access computers to provide quick access to Internet resources for the unemployed. |
