The records of the Michigan Society, SAR date back to 1890, the year the Society was chartered.
These indexes were created through the generous efforts of volunteers and staff of the Library of Michigan's Rare Book Program. The indexes were transcribed from the original handwritten records; as early handwriting varies in legibility and is sometimes undecipherable, misspellings and variations of names do appear in these records.
Each index is sorted by a particular field-applicant's name, ancestor's names, state number or national number:
- The applicant's name refers to the name of the individual who applied for membership to the Michigan Society, SAR.
- The ancestor's name is the name of the ancestor who can be traced back to service in the Revolutionary War. In cases where there is more than one Revolutionary ancestor per applicant, all of those ancestors have been included in the file.
- The national number refers to the assigned SAR national number and corresponds to the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications. These applications have been microfilmed and are arranged numerically by national number. The microfilm is located in the Genealogy Microfilm Room on the second floor of the Library (Microfilm E 202.3 .S66 1941).
- The state number references the number assigned by the Michigan Society, SAR. The Michigan volumes are arranged numerically and are housed in the Rare Book Collection on the fourth floor of the Library (Rare Michigan E 202.4 .M54 S6). Researchers will need the complete citation found in these files-specifically the volume number. Please check with a staff member in the Rare Book Room for assistance in retrieving the appropriate record. The Rare Book Program has set guidelines for Using Rare Books at the Library of Michigan. These guidelines include information about copying materials.
