Have fun with Michigan's Settlement Era history.
Here are some links to more things to do or read.

• The Barn Exhibit at Walker Tavern shows what travel was like during settlement days. There are three special kids' activities, too!

• Make a corn husk doll. The Michigan Historical Museum prepared this neat activity for you on the MI Kids! Web site.

• Design a simple pioneer nine-patch quilt and construct a pioneer town in the "Laura Ingalls Wilder Activities" section at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum web site.

• Michigan History for Kids has a special issue about "Statehood for Michigan" and an issue of The Mitten about "Pioneer Life." You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to see these because they are PDF files.

• Past Patterns, a company that makes patterns for people who want to sew historical-looking clothing, has an 1830s paper doll you can print and cut out.

• What else was happening in the United States while the settlers were coming to Michigan? Jump back in time to the period of "Western Expansion & Reform" in "America's Story" at America's Library. Be sure to read the "Welcome to the Great Lakes State. Michigan Becomes a State" story!
